FRIENDS OF MIDTOWN NEWS AND EVENTS

SPRING NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTED

For the first time in several years a Friends of Midtown paper newsletter is being distributed throughout midtown.  By ‘casting a bigger net’ we hope to become known more broadly throughout midtown and hope to encourage participation. A special thank you to Church World Plus Midtown Media Center for providing a discount on the printing of the newsletters and to the volunteers who delivered them.

SPRING SOCIAL FRIDAY APRIL 9 AT GALLERY BLU

Join us on Friday April 9 from 7-9pm at Gallery Blu (1633 N Third St.) for our spring social. Meet your neighbors, browse the current exhibition, “Art of the Neighborhood” celebrating Gallery Blu’s first anniversary, and listen to the sounds of Jonathan Frazier. Hors d’oeuvers and refreshment will be provided. Admission is free to FoM members with the presentation of your current membership card; non-members $5. Half the proceeds will go to OIC Summer Reading Club Kick-Off Event scheduled for June 5. A door prize will also be awarded. Please RSVP to events@friendsofmidtown.org if planning to attend.

UPCOMING EVENT: SPRING CLEAN-UP SATURDAY APRIL 24

Save the Date: The first of our annual clean-ups will take place on Saturday April 24 from 9am-1pm. Meet at HACC Midtown parking lot at Third & Harris. The clean-up will cover the area bound by Verbeke, Kelker, Front, and Seventh streets plus Third Street between Forster and Maclay. FoM has adopted this area of Third Street. Bags, gloves, and refreshments will be provided. This is the first of three clean-ups we have scheduled for midtown this year.

LIGHTS ON FOR SAFETY

With warm weather approaching, incidents of muggings and thefts are likely to increase. Two ways you can help deter crime and promote safe streets are to turn on porch lights and report street lamp outages. Light sensors that install directly into the outside lamp can be purchased so you don’t have to remember to turn on and off the porch lights. Please use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Street lamp outages can be reported to McClure Mechanical at 1-800-382-1319. Please notate the pole number found on the street lamp, or provide the specific location.

CIVIC EVENTS IMPACTING MIDTOWN

HAVE YOU COMPLETED AND RETURNED YOUR CENSUS FORM?

2010 Census forms were mailed to households in mid-March. Has it been buried under a pile of mail unopened because of busy schedules? If so, this is your reminder to get it completed and returned. A lot is riding on your participation: the number of Congressional seats Pennsylvania receives, redistricting of Congressional and state house seats, and the amount of federal tax dollars coming to our area.

A “March to the Mailbox” initiative is scheduled for Saturday April 10. More info to follow.

GREENWORKS HOSTING NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING MARCH 31

GreenWorks will be hosting a neighborhood meeting to discuss the Magisterial District Judge’s office, Midtown Cinema, and parking for both. WHEN: Wednesday, March 31, 6:30pm. WHERE: 1519 N Third, 1st floor.
